When I was much younger and serving God in my first few years of ministry (22-24 years old), I felt I was important to God and in getting His message out to others. I remember thinking to myself that God would never allow anything to happen to me, because He needed me to fulfill His purposes on earth. I thought I was one of His key players in ministry. In fact, when reading the scriptures, I identified with those Biblical heroes in the stories. I was David slaying Goliath, I was Moses leading His people, I was – well, you get it.
As I grew spiritually and matured, I realized that God really didn’t need me. He was so much bigger than me. He was going to fulfill His purposes and plan whether I was a part of them or not. In fact, I’m not like those heroes, but a part of the scared and often, doubting crowd. I was part of His people that David saved that day, I was part of the crowd that Moses delivered. God doesn’t need me, but He gives me the privilege and opportunity to be a part of something that is so much bigger than myself. It’s an honor and a joy to serve God and play a small role in building His church. As I read God’s Word, it’s important to see that “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so” is not just a song but a powerful truth.
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for In him we live and move and have our being. Acts 17:24-28
