Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

Preparing for Easter – part 3

Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.” Luke 20:46-47

I’ve been thinking a lot this week how about how many people follow a Jesus that was never presented in the Scriptures. I mean, we get the need for a Savior because no one wants to live forever in a bad place. We even get the birth – though some debate over just how miraculous it really was. What I’m talking about are the things Jesus says that call us to repentance, that call us to change from our old selves into what God has designed for us. For many, we expect God to work for us. “Hey God, I believe in you, now make my life comfortable (new car, new job, new house, new spouse, etc…)”

Today, read who Jesus said He was and the reactions in Luke 20:41-47 and in Luke 22:1-6. It is sometimes difficult to be a disciple of the Truth and the Way. What about when Jesus doesn’t act like we think He should? Think on this and how this way of thinking led Judas astray. As you begin your time of prayer today, do a spiritual checkup and see if you are like the long-winded Scribes or are your prayers authentic and heartfelt to God.
