Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

Devoted to Prayer

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42

Another important earmark of the early church was prayer. Communication with our Heavenly Father is what fueled their ministry and gave power to their witness. As Christ followers, we need to gird ourselves up in prayer to effectively live out our daily lives. The scripture above says that they were devoted to prayer. This wasn’t an afterthought, it was a continuous conversation with God.

In Acts Chapter 4, it says, “after they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken.” Wow! After they prayed, the place was shaken. Can you imagine if we prayed with that same sense of passion, that same sense of urgency? What might we accomplish for the kingdom if we were devoted to prayer.

Philippians 4:6 says, Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Scripture is clear, we need to take everything to God in prayer.

You got headaches that plague you?  Talk to God about it.  Your feet hurt at the end of a ten-hour work day?  Talk to God about it.  You’ve got a car that’s got 220,000 miles on it and you’re saying, “Should I trade it in?”  Talk to God about it. Is your child is struggling at school?  Talk to God about it. Is your boss is driving you crazy at work?  Talk to God about it. Are you concerned about the economy? Talk to God about it. Is there tension in your family, and you’re worried? Talk to God about it. Scripture says to, Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7.)

If you spend more time in prayer, I promise that it will change your life. We serve a God who loves and cares for us. Seek Him and His word daily. Pray continuously about what matters to you and seek His will for your life.
