Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

I Believe… sort of

I believe; help my unbelief—Mark 9:24

Have you really thought about what you believe about God?

Some givens (I think):

  • We know He is Omnipotent – all powerful. He created everything (Genesis 1; Colossians 1:16).
  • We know He is Omniscient – he sees everything and knows everything and can do anything (Isaiah 55:9; Hebrews 4:13; Ephesians 3:20)
  • We know that it has always been so (Psalm 90:1-2, John 1:1).
  • We know that despite his awesome-ness, he cares about each of us. He loves us, no matter what, even to the point of dying in our place (John 3:16);

We know all that, but do we really believe it? I think that most of us, if we were honest, would say that we believe, but we also have some unbelief.

How we see Jesus, what we believe about Jesus, affects everything we do. I mean, are we confessing with our mouths but secretly believe something different? As Christ followers, we must seek to reconcile our beliefs with who he says he is. We must really get to know Him. It’s about our relationship with Jesus, not just our knowledge of who He is.

A.W. Tozer said, “The most portentous fact about any man is not what he at a given time may say or do, but what he in his deep heart conceives God to be like.”

Like the Psalmist, ask God to search your heart and mind. Identify areas of unbelief. Then, bring them to God, in prayer. Ask for help. Ask him to teach you about himself. Ask him to help your unbelief. Get to Know Jesus not just about Him.
