35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
John 6:35
This past Sunday we looked at John 6 where Jesus begins a discourse with the crowd. In verse 27, He tells them not to work for the food that perishes but for the food that endures to eternal life – which He will give you.
In understanding more deeply what Jesus is saying, we can look back to Chapter 4 when He addresses the Samaritan woman at the well and offers her living water.
Jesus is talking about more than just bread and water in these passages, He is talking about the difference of making a living and living a life. Physical bread and physical water will leave us hungry and thirsty again, but what Jesus offers is something greater. He is telling them – and us, to look to the things that are eternal, seeking first the Kingdom of God, and then God will take care of our daily needs.
How often do we seek the things that are temporary and quickly fade? How are we tempted to work for this food?
