Have you ever struggled with your Bible reading? If we’re being honest, I believe that we all have. For me, a 62-year old man/boy with ADD, distractions abound. So many things seem more urgent and alluring—things like email, text messages, social media, the latest news, to-do lists, the latest Netflix series, Grand-children, the Braves, Atlanta United or opportunities to connect with actual people.
Besides the distractions that try and keep me from God’s Word, I find some parts of the Bible hard to understand. Even as a preacher I still struggle with children dying for the sins of their parents. Two guys that are trying to stop the ark of God from falling, are struck down by God. A Father offering his daughters to a group of men so they will leave his visitors alone. What exactly is predestination and other theological ideas. However,I believe it was Mark Twain that once said, “it ain’t the parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me; it’s the parts that I do understand.”
And then there are those long, long passages that list everything and everyone like Leviticus.
I find myself revisiting scripture that encourage me to run the race with endurance. Scriptures like 2 Timothy 3:16-17 -“All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 – “We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,” and
Romans 12:2 – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
The Bible allows us to see the heart of God and to give us power and comfort in a crazy world.
Feeding on God’s Word is so important. I want to encourage you to open the Bible and let God speak to you.
