Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

The Bible Is Not Simply A Book

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.

Joshua 1:8

The writer of the Book of Hebrews says that the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight. (Hebrews 412-13a)

This verse lets us know a couple of things:

  1. God’s Word is living and active – these are not just words on a page, but are in fact, words that give life, hope, comfort, encouragement, and peace; however,
  2. The second phrase lets us know that the word of God cuts through our veiled attempts of doing our own thing. His word exposes our thoughts and intentions and nothing is hidden from Him.

Paul, in his letter to the Romans, appeals to us not to be conformed to this world (we are just visitors here), but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, that by testing we may be able to discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:2)

How do we know God’s will for our lives? How can we hear from God with regard to our daily lives?

I suggest we start with His Word – the Bible. Every time we open this Holy Book, God speaks to us. Sometimes He is encouraging us and sometimes He is correcting us. Living the life that God has called us to through Jesus isn’t always easy. In fact, Jesus tells us that we will be hated by the world. However, spending time in His word gives us hope and direction and is filled with His promises.
