The Awesomeness of God

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” — Psalm 8:1

Psalm 8 begins and ends with wonder. David looks up at the night sky—the moon, the stars, the vastness of creation—and is overwhelmed. In the face of such greatness, he asks an honest question: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them?” (v.4).

Have you ever felt small? Insignificant? Easy to overlook?

This has been a very different week for us as we have gathered around Margie’s mom. We have felt great joy, deep sadness, uncertainty – all of the emotions given our present circumstances. I believe that David felt that too—but he didn’t stop there.

Instead of concluding that humanity is meaningless, David discovers something astonishing: God notices us. God cares for us. God crowns us with glory and honor (v.5). The same God who set the stars in place has entrusted human beings with responsibility, purpose, and dignity.

Psalm 8 reminds us of two truths that have held us together as a family:

  • God is infinitely greater than us.
  • God deeply values us.

Our worth doesn’t come from our accomplishments, titles, or recognition—it comes from the Creator who knows our name. When we understand who God is, we begin to understand who we are. And when we remember who we are in Him, we’re moved to live with humility, gratitude, purpose, and trust. We are learning to trust God and that He really does know best.

So today, pause. Look up. Let creation remind you of God’s majesty—and let God’s Word remind you of your value.
