Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

I and the Father are One

29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” John 10:29-30

The Jews ask Jesus to tell them plainly who he is. They probably wanted a sign. Jesus says that he told them but they would not believe. Further, Jesus has shown them who he was but they would not believe. These Pharisees were unable to connect the words of Jesus with the works of Jesus. The response of the people is to try to stone Jesus.

The works of Jesus prove who he is. Even if you will not listen to his teaching, look at what he has done:

He has turned water into wine; He has healed a paralytic; He has fed over 5000 people; He has given sight to the blind; He is going to give his life for his sheep so that they may have life.

The works were to help us understand that the Father is in Jesus and Jesus is in the Father. His works are proof of his words. Jesus is drawing attention to his words so that we will listen to him.

In this passage, we see that there is division as to who Jesus is. While many wanted to stone Him – did not believe Him, there were those that began to believe that He was who He said He was.

What about us today?
