Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

Specks and Logs

You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. Matthew 7:5

God cares about the condition of all our relationships. Jesus reveals to us in this passage the key to good relationships. Jesus is calling us to change our “hypocrisy” to humility, to stop measuring, pretending we have it all together – to have true regard for one another.

We do this by humbly examining our own sins. Then we confess these to God and to others. Only the cross has the power to correct our tendency to hide the logs in our lives. After that, we can begin to help others with their specks. Real love is not ignoring the specks in the lives of others.

It is in this mutual dependence (the Church) that we can live distinctly different than the world around us.
