Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

Suffered and Died

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross” Hebrews 12:1-2

Jesus suffered under Pontius Pilate. This cannot be argued historically. This really occurred. The means by which Jesus was killed is crucifixion. He physically died. He didn’t swoon; he died, and he was buried in a rich man’s tomb.

The four Gospels show different perspectives of the same event. What abuse did Jesus endure under Pontius Pilate? They pulled the beard out of his face. They spit on him. They mocked him. They stripped him naked. They did everything possible to shame him.

If you want to know how badly God hates sin, we have only to look at the cross of Christ. Maybe we need to gaze upon the wrath of God. However, there is no sin imaginable with more power than the cross of Jesus Christ. The death of Christ reconciles us to God and creates a covenant community of faith that is both universal and local.
