Daniel lived in Babylon. He learned its language, studied its literature, worked within its government, and was even given a Babylonian name. In many ways, Daniel became part of Babylonian society. But Babylon never became the deepest part of Daniel.
Daniel understood something we easily forget: where you live is not the same as who you are. The culture around us is constantly trying to give us an identity. We are defined by what we accomplish, what we own, how others see us, our successes, our failures, our politics, our past, or the labels others place upon us.
Daniel refused to let Babylon have the final word about who he was. And as followers of Jesus, neither should we.
Paul writes, “For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” Colossians 3:3
Our deepest identity isn’t something we achieve; it’s something we receive. We belong to Christ. We are loved, forgiven, redeemed, and called by Him. That means we don’t have to withdraw from the world around us. Like Daniel, we can serve, work, build relationships, and contribute to our communities. We can live faithfully in Babylon without allowing Babylon to live in us.
