Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

What Are You Carrying That God Never Asked You to Carry?

Have you ever tried to carry too many things at once? You’ve got your coffee in one hand, your phone in the other, maybe a bag over your shoulder, your keys somewhere, and instead of making two trips, you convince yourself, “No, I’ve got this.” And then something falls.

I wonder if we sometimes live our lives the same way. We carry our responsibilities. We carry concerns about our families. We carry problems at work. We carry worries about finances. We carry concern for people we love. And sometimes we’re carrying things that haven’t even happened yet. Before long, we’re trying to carry everything.

Peter writes in 1 Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” I love that last part: because He cares for you. God isn’t telling us to give Him our worries because they don’t matter. He tells us to give them to Him precisely because we matter to Him.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:34, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Sometimes we need to ask ourselves, “Am I carrying today’s responsibility—or tomorrow’s worry? Those are two very different things. What’s in your hands today?

So here’s the thought we should carry: Do what God has given you to do, and trust God with what only God can do. And remember, you don’t have to carry everything. God never asked you to.
