Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

What On Earth Are We Here For?

“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” – Ephesians 2:10

At some point, every one of us asks the question: “Why am I here?” The world offers countless answers: success, happiness, comfort, and influence. But those answers leave us empty because they are centered on self. Scripture tells us something far more life-giving: we are here because God created us, loves us, and has a purpose for us.

God’s Word says you are His workmanship—His masterpiece. That means every detail of your life was carefully formed. Your gifts, your passions, even your struggles—God can use them as part of His plan.

First, we are here for God Himself. Jesus said the greatest commandment is this: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37). Before anything else, our purpose is to know Him, love Him, and walk with Him.

This means that when we spend time with Him in prayer, worship, and His Word, we are living out our greatest purpose. We were created to enjoy His presence. Life begins to make sense when we start with God at the center.

Second, Jesus immediately added a second command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39). We are here to love people. God designed us to live in relationship—with family, with friends, with the church, and with the world around us.

That means we don’t just ask, “What can I get out of life?” Instead, we ask, “How can I give? How can I serve? How can I show the love of Christ today?” Every smile, every encouraging word, every act of kindness can become part of God’s purpose for us.

Third, God never intended us to try to figure life out on our own. Just like the parts of a body need each other, we need each other in the Body of Christ. Together, we can do what none of us could do alone.

Community shapes us, stretches us, and strengthens us. When we serve side by side, forgive one another, and walk together through struggles, we are living out the reason we are here: to reflect God’s love as His people.

So, what on earth are we here for?
We are here for God, here for others, and here for community. Life is not about chasing success or comfort—it’s about glorifying God by living in love.
