Loving God, Loving Others, Making Disciples

Holy Week Events Leading to the Resurrection

This is Holy Week, and there is a lot going on. It begins with Palm Sunday, when Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey, fulfilling Zechariah 9:9. The crowds shout Hosanna, and Jesus is welcomed into the city.

On Monday, Jesus goes to work. Today, He clears the Temple by driving out the money changers. He tells them that: “My house shall be called a house of prayer.” Some of the crowd begin to turn from Him.

Tuesday is a full day of teaching and conflict. Jesus teaches in parables, and the Religious leaders challenge Him. He also gives end-times teaching (Olivet Discourse.)

Wednesday is a quiet day; however, His betrayal begins when Judas agrees to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver.

Thursday, Jesus shares a meal and communion with His disciples. He washes the disciples’ feet. He prays in the garden at Gethsemane, and He is arrested that night.

Friday, Jesus is tried before Pilate and others. He is beaten, mocked, and crucified. When He dies, the Temple veil is torn from top to bottom.

Saturday, Jesus is in the tomb. The tomb is sealed and guarded. It is a day of silence, grief, and waiting.

Sunday, Jesus rises from the dead. The tomb is empty. Jesus appears to His followers, and we celebrate His victory over sin and death.
