Breastplate of Righteousness

1Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:11-12

Paul says, “the devil’s schemes…” and that implies strategy and deception. This is more a matter of slow erosion than of some sort of dramatic collapse. It often comes through a quiet compromise, drifting priorities, numbing out, and isolation. The enemy doesn’t need to destroy us. His scheme is to distract us away from God’s Word. Paul describes the second piece of armor – the breastplate of righteousness:

“Stand firm then… with the breastplate of righteousness in place.” Ephesians 6:14

As the week begins, many of us are already feeling the weight of what’s ahead—responsibilities, pressures, decisions, and the unexpected moments that can shake us. Some of the greatest battles we face won’t be outward, but inward—discouragement, guilt, comparison, or doubt. That’s why God gives us the breastplate of righteousness.

In the armor of God, the breastplate protects the heart. And spiritually, righteousness does the same. The good news is this: we don’t have to earn this righteousness—it’s been given to us through Jesus. We stand right with God today, not because of what we did yesterday, but because of what Christ has already done for us. We don’t have to carry lingering guilt, ongoing shame, or the pressure to prove ourselves – we are already covered by the Blood of the Lamb.

However, we are also called to live in alignment with who God says we are. As we choose integrity, obedience, and surrender, we strengthen that protection around our hearts. As we step into this week, remember: we are covered—and we are called to walk in that covering.
